Raindance Honey
We keep bees not only for their honey but to help pollinate our abundant clover and apple blossoms. Bees are like our own mini-sized herd of livestock. They dot the landscape like the cows but you have to get close to notice them. When we are out in the field fixing fence they surround us with their happy hum. It is kind of like parallel play but in this case it is parallel work. Unfortunately we lost all our hives to colony collapse disorder last winter and have no honey this year. Because everything is connected it is no coincidence we had no apples this year on the entire farm - not a one!We try to make our farm a friendly place for bees (and birds). This past summer four bee swarms made their way to our farm and Raindance Farm Partner Rob Grassi bravely climbed up high on the tractor loader bucket and shook them into bee hive boxes. All four colonies liked their new homes enough to stay and we hope they make it through winter. To increase their chances we did not harvest any honey. I urge everyone to learn about the threat colony collapse disorder poses to our food security and I urge you to refrain from using chemical insecticides around your house. Thanks.
Raindance Apples
We harvest some of our wild fruit on the farm. They are certified organic and of course seasonal. Other wild crops that are certified by NOFA-NY include fiddleheads and wild grapes.
Raindance Rabbits
We will have "forage fed rabbits" in the summer and fall.
